Connection to Core x is unstable ... causes frequent monitor swaps

I have a 2018 Mac mini with a core.x egpu running a Radeon RX Vega 64 ... recently I noticed a severe sensitivity to just waking my computer up. I get a lot of messages about the GPU being disconnected improperly, and a lot of swapping of monitors. In the beginning, I could lose connectivity to both monitors, particularly after a soft reboot ... maybe after a software update. then I could not see what state the computer was in, so to get around that I moved one monitor to the HDMI port on the computer itself ... that way I could not be completely blind to the state of the computer. So now I have one stable connection ... the HDMI directly attached monitor, and one unstable connection to the Core-X connected monitor. This can result in long periods of instability after waking my computer up.
