recently bought the razer blade 15 in mercury white. concerned about overheating when running even light software. With two tabs in firefox and one photoshop file open the fan drowns out all sound and the laptop gets notably hot. Not sure how normal this was or if I should be concerned.

CPU can handle 100 degrees and gpu I believe somewhere on 90 ish like mid 90 till the system shutdown itself for protection, that’s what we call overheating. However it’s not good to run the system near that point for a long run since heat is laptop best enemy that might faster wearing the parts inside. To Control it you habe to monitor the Temperatures using software like intel xtu, HWinfo64, afterburner etc and if it’s hot tweak like cpu undervolting that most owner of gaming Laptop with intel cpu do or dusting the fans areas for better fans performance or even doing repasting with better compound might needed if you run on higher temperature, because at thermal throttling areas gaming experience isn’t great due performance drops like big FPS drops.
Unfortunately it's to normal! I have a Razor Blade 15 as well and I've put a thermometer to it and it's 110+ deg. The trackpad buttons don't work anymore and the keyboard is ballooning. Can't even keep the laptop closed when not in use. I've had the computer a year and it's a my primary system and was really pleased with the laptop in the beginning but not any.
Get yourself some kind of extra cooling system so you can avoid an additional issues.
