persistent recurring (~1m), small/short connection breaks mouse freezes (~1s). Basilisk V3 Pro + Mouse Dock Pro. | Razer Insider
Skip to main content

Had the Razer Basilisk V3 Pro for a few weeks now.
With the small Dongle I noticed no problems.

Some nice words before going into the heavy stuff:
[+] Generally I would say this is a very good product and the performance of the mouse, robustness on different surfaces, and the feel of the exactness of mouse movement to onscreen cursor, all feels amazing!
[-] Battery time is absolute sh*t though! Excuse my language. Like 2-3 days. But then again, I am in this regard coming spoiled from a Logitech MX Master 2S which lasted well over 1 month of full day use, I think around 2m+ (advertised as 3, but wouldn't say from qualitative feeling). (Not competitor promotion, but comparison relevant to discussion and context.)
[±] I am lacking a battery indicator (function). Again, from the MX Master 2S. But this can easily be fixed, suggestion: have a special key combo, like bottom profile button] + sensitivity button] show battery charge level (State of Charge, SoC) with the LEDs on a colourscale red-orange-yellow-green.

The not nice stuff:
Saturdag Dec23 I got the Mouse Dock Pro mainly for the charging convenience.

Problem #1: 1 occurance, connection permanently died

After first pairing and FW update on all 3 devices (Mouse, Dongle, Dock, ,1]), I played around with the polling rate - and first problem.
Since 8K takes ~20% of an AMD Ryzen 6000, I decided to find a sweetspot of 1K< but with negligible ~<5% CPU load.
So I was moving frantically to check CPU load at 8K, 1K, 2K, then 4K and then after 20s connection just permadied. (Something overheated from processing too much? Dock? Mouse itself?)
Powercycling the Mouse didn't work. Replugging Dock didn't work. Got a little worried. Think unplugging + Mouse off, then replugging, then Mouse on, got it back.

Problem #2: constant occurance with Mouse Dock Pro only, intermittent constant small connection breaks

Consistently, and constantly persistent, every 1.5 - 2 - 2.5 m (I've timed with timer) the connection disappears for 0.5-1-2 s.
This behaviour is same in Windows with official Razer software, aswell as in Linux in default automatic PnP mode.
In Windows, tried extensively with 2K, and 1K (same as Dongle).
No difference when: tried Dock (and Dongle both), in a laptop- dock/hub and direct USBA port.
No difference when: in Windows, I've tried powercycling both Mouse + Dock.
No difference when: in Windows, I've tried un-pairing and re-pairing Mouse to Dock.
No difference when: I've tried placing the Dock close infront of the Mouse, with clear unobstructed LoS, and no other clutter around.
Today, Monday Dec25 it seems to have worsened to being more frequent, and I had several double breaks in close succession.

Is this just a software/firmware error or a hardware error?
Is it the newly acquired Dock that is faulty?
Or is it the Mouse itself that has two slightly different communication methods with the Dongle and Dock, and one of them is faulty?

Problem #3: skips/gaps in mouse trace (in Windows only)

In Linux I have perfect equidistant mouse traces.
But in Windows there are "gaps/skips" - very ironically just like those that the marketing shows should be improved from lesser mice by getting this superMouse.
My guesstimate is a frequency of 10Hz.

Problem #4: Mouse is warm (bottom) even when fully charged on Dock

Is the heat coming from the battery itself?
Is the battery getting overcharged?
Is something else in the Mouse heating up? Wireless coil? LED-control curcuitry?
Either battery is being destroyed or a couple watts (1-2) of idle power consumption are being wasted. Typical stand-by power recommendation for appliances is guidelined to 0.1-0.2W.
