Razer Blade 15 (2020) overheating

I've got a Razer Blade 15, purchased November 2020. It used to run almost silently, aside from when under heavy load, and would get a good 4 hours battery life when I went into the office. Now the fans constantly operate, it's hot to the touch even after getting a cooling stand, and the battery life is under two hours. The performance is also far lower than it used to be, presumably due to throttling the CPU back for thermal management. This change occured between late October- early november 2021, when the machine was almost exactly 12 months old.

Steps taken:

  • I've double checked fans are on auto in Synapse

  • I checked the CPU core temperatures, and found they were regularly exceeding 90C, even with the machine idle.

  • I cleaned out all the dust that I could with compressed air.

  • When I considered getting support from Razer the website told me it was out of "limited warranty" and ineligible for free support so I took it to a local computer technician who cleaned and repasted the cooling system

  • I tried updating operating system to windows 11. The machine hung/froze during the setup and had to be powered down by holding power and then turning back on, and eventually went into recovery mode returning to windows 10.

  • I tried a clean install of windows 11. Again the machine hung/froze during setup, but it did eventually complete. After installing the machine would just freeze, mouse cursor wouldn't move, no response to keypresses.

  • I tried updating the BIOS, but the tool did not seem to work in windows 11.

  • I tried a clean install of windows 10, using the microsoft media creation tool. Again the installation process hung several times and had to be power cycled. I was able to update the BIOS in windows 10. However the machine would still hang occasionally.

  • I then used the Razer recovery (F9 at POST) to reinstall. The system is no longer hanging, but I'm seeing cpu core temperatures > 90C when the machine is idle (CPU load < 5%).

It's sad to hear that the issue continues after performing all the related steps and sending the laptop to a local technician. Razer offers an out-of-warranty repair for our units that are not part of the discontinued models and is within the country where Razer ships our products. Have you contacted our Support Team via email? If you haven't, you can submit a case by clicking this link or sending me a PM. I'll be locking this thread now to divert our conversation privately.
