Razer Huntsman Elite local profiles not saving to keyboard

As the title suggest, I'm having issues with saving profiles to the on-board memory. I'm using synapse 3 and dragging the profile to the memory card icon and making sure it is syncing. But once I change the profile using the FN + Menu key it just reverts back to default settings.

This was a conscious decision after months of deliberation and debate for several reasons :

1. Older devices would never get updates for lighting effects. For example; BW Chroma (first gen) never got Starlight and Fire effects in Synapse 2 because the firmware didn't support it. Only when Synapse 3 was released, we could bring those effects to older devices. We want to keep bringing new Chroma features to our devices for a longer time, which is feasible when using software-driven effects. For reference, all future lighting effects and other lighting related features, will automatically be available on all Synapse 3 devices.

2. On-board micro-controllers don't have the RAM/storage to run complex effects (on multi-layered effects) well. We didn't want to do half-and-half of effects that could be stored on device or that could be run on Synapse. Plus there's only so many effects that can be stored on the limited amount of memory available on-board.

We decided to use that memory for implementing a macro engine, which allows you to execute macros (including even mouse movements) without Synapse.

3. If we want to add or update any lighting effects, we'd have update the firmware for ALL the Chroma devices. This in-turn would require us to test different permutations and combinations of firmware and software versions, which isn't practical.

4. Synapse 3 has Chroma on the forefront with location-aware effects. Those aren't possible using just firmware as it is.

Let me clarify the razer team explanation:

For those Hybrid-Memory keyboards the decistion (after several months discusts) is you must store the most important aspects such as macros and other engine algorithms, and giving the lighting less priority, thinking this as a sample:
For the 100% hybrid memory:
95% is for engine algorithms.
5% is for default cycling spectrum color.
Right?

I understand the complexity lighting effects such starlight, fire, and more coming effects in fact it's imposible allow to store on that 5% piece of memory, so you must run synapse 3;
but this 5% is enough to store simple effects similar to cycling spectrum, like rainbow, breathing, reactive, ripple or the most basic static color.

And are you telling us (customers in some cases who paid a $199 keyboard) that we are not allowed to change/modify/select that 5% color on hybrid-memory?
This would be a powerfull feature that is claimed by users, pretty sure a big percentage of razer keyboards owners don't look up the forums for this issue.

I hope razer take actions and unlock this feature in some short synapse update, this would be the best and correct solution for the users (and razer) software interests.

"The Keyboard tab is the main tab for your Razer Huntsman Elite. From here, you can change your device settings such as key assignments, gaming mode settings, and your device's lighting. Changes made under this tab are automatically saved to your system and cloud storage however, you need to click the On-board Profiles button to open the storage slots for your Razer device's on-board memory then drag and drop the profiles you want to store on your device."

Either Synapse 3 is still broken or they deliberately left out that lighting is not stored on board memory even though it is a part of a profile. This is a major letdown and perhaps false advertising. :slightly_sad:

I appreciate your honestly and understand your predicament.

However

I do not like default breathing profile. At the very least let us set the keyboard to a static color instead of breathing. At least on the Huntsman / future keyboards.

I use the keyboard at work because I enjoy the typing experience. We are not allowed to install Synapse 3 due to the presence of the Softminer. I know it's an optional install but our IT none-the-less refuses to install it for obvious reasons (once Synapse is installed there's nothing stopping people from installing the softminer on work machines).

I know we're a small minority, and I know it's not a trivial ask. But it has to be possible to let us just set a static color. Not to mention the advertising is misleading and fails to mention the on-board memory only extends to Macros.

Just an all around bummer and the absence of this compromise will definitely keep me away from Razer products in the future. I'll also be advising friends, family, and co-workers to avoid them as well. It's a bad look for a "premium hardware" company.
After reading, ALL of the posts related to this thread - I am VERY disappointed. The advertising is clearly misleading in the seeming claim that multiple profiles are saved on-board and they can go with you from computer to computer. Not the case. If done right: a color or macro profile is developed - hybrid I suppose - then that is saved to the local memory of the device - then the OS would not matter. Linux or Mac or Windows - if I press a macro command then I should be able to have a sequence such as ":RMarkdown pdf" be typed out. NOPE, not the case with the Razer product Huntsman. I should be able to select a developed color scheme and have it work seamlessly. NOPE. I get a - sometimes the color scheme is correct and sometimes it just won't connect to the synapse program so I have to do a restart of program or computer.... the overhead in time and stress is ridiculous. This seems like an eco-system control money grab that was completely influenced by the bloated MBAs in the company rather than passionate tech gurus that just want to make a killer product. The quality of the product is because of the gurus. MBA folks, you are ruining the product for the rest of us. If MY assessment is wrong, then maybe in a few years your product will be back on track and I can entertain using the best hardware for my work. However, at this point I am going back to the store to get a competitor's keyboard. If their advertising is also misleading- then I will try another keyboard. Until I find the keyboard/tool that gets the job done, is reliable, and is awesome overall. Your are on the right track with the HUNTSMAN, but you have missed the bar big time with the portability of your hardware. If you are going to be awesome, then be awesome; provide an awesome product. If you are going to continue to mess with your customers and refuse to listen because you "THOUGHT" you were listening - perhaps I can start the company that will be your successor (FkRAZER) because there is clearly going to be a gap in the field. AGAIN: You killed it with awesome mechanics and awesome concepts, but your inability to implement a minimum level of OS agnostic onboard memory customization has left me feeling ripped off; you LIED in your advertising. I do sincerely hope you get the message. I am taking my money back and look forward to you or someone else getting it RIGHT for gamers and professionals. Also, FYI, your software overhead (Synapse having to be one and pinging the keyboard etc) does interfere with games and professional uses - this ruins the experience for your users and makes the keyboard un-usable for some professionals. Please do it right and stop trying to rip out money with your cloud and software ecosystem. No one likes your software. We like your hardware. We aren't going to like your software interfering or being an overhead to your hardware. Please. Just provide awesome hardware. Let the software be some sort of optional. Please. I have read your excuse regarding the on-board macros - not sufficient excuse - WEAK. I truly look forward to trying again with your hardware in a few years. I am sad because I really had high hopes and now I have to go waste my time looking through otherwise inferior products. DEPRESSING. *sigh* :<(

I've just bought a Razer Turret for Xbox One (for use with Windows 10), and I'm pretty frustrated about the scenario discussed in this thread. Spectrum Cycling is not somethjing I would ever want to use, and having it enabled makes me feel like a tasteless teenager. A static colour would be a far more sensible default choice.

The only thing I can do to get around it is to switch off lighting entirely, and trying to use this keyboard with no backlight is tough.

And that is great approach. BUT, I think that would be OK to put some other lightning effects on baord, just simple one, so we can switch that default wave. Like reactive (pick background color, front color, and speed), ripple effect, and so on. And if user want to put software in front of it - no problem. Take for example CoolerMaster MK750: it has on board complex lighning effect AND software to make them. You can use software or not for controlling effect - best solution. So, PLEASE in name of all Razer users: make possible to store lighning effects (made in Chroma studio) on board so we can close Synapse and save couple of CPU/memory usage. Thanks 🙂

Thanks for not beating around the bush.

I played around with the keyboard some more using alternate ways of driving it (no Synapse) and found out that the hardware still supports a lot of lighting effects. What is even more interesting: I had activated static color (this is what I want to use) and the keyboard seems to persist this setting. It keeps it across boot cycles. I could even unplug the keyboard and when plugged in it would go back to the static color I had set. The setting only gets lost once I start Synapse and upon closing it the keyboard gets reset to chroma cycle.

This made me wondering: Wouldn't it be possible to have at least a very limited way to configure a fallback lighting in Synapse for when Synapse is not running? It seems the hardware is already fully capable of doing this.
I'm thinking about people who use these keyboards outside gaming as well or in the workplace. Essentially there would only need to be two options in the software: chroma cycle or static color (with color selection obviously).

Nonetheless, I'm outa here. I just wanted some nice static color and have figured out I can get that by simply deinstalling Synapse and hacking the keyboard to a color of my liking once and be done with it.

And I am not happy with the level of work required to achieve such a modest goal.
can we have static color at the very least for on board memory? if not there is really no point in getting. I can't install Synapse on my corporate laptop. Can Razer team solve this for us?
I know for a fact that you cannot please everyone. The closest you can get is give the users so many options that they can seriously mess things up, or it takes a few weeks to learn what all the settings can do.
I love complicated things personally, but it has been proven time and time again that common sense is not always common. In other words: The more options you give your customers, the more complaints you get back.

I am part of the group that just wants to be able to change the default lighting on the Huntsman to something more work appropriate.

May I suggest a third option: Advanced user setup. Let us super picky people absolve Razer from our own problems we create, and give us the option to modify the onboard default settings.
Razer team please review this feature. It is very important for us! Please allow the use of the onboard color profile even without the Synapse 3.0

  • Hybrid On-Board Memory and Cloud Storage – up to 5 profiles

This On-Board Memory is very misleading
Ran into the same issue, but liked the keyboard as such and want to keep it, so I did some research whether there might be any hope. It seems some guys are working on a Linux driver for some time now. (open razer) and the discussions over there are very eye opening as to what's going on here.

It seems Razer dumbed down the keyboard controller compared to older keyboards. The guys at open razer call it "software based lighting". The keyboard can do exactly one lighting on its own - the dreaded chroma cycle. This animation is active unless the keyboard is being driven by Synapse.

When driven by Synapse, the keyboard essentially acts like a dumb screen. It just displays a picture (imagine each key being a pixel) which is sent to it by the PC. Synapse calculates the animation on your PC and updates the keyboard at a high enough frame rate.

Lighting not working without Synapse was not an accident or oversight. Someone wanted it to be like this - probably to save development effort / cost. (The dumb picture mode was needed anyway for more advanced lighting setups, so why not use it for everything?)

Its ironic though that this cost saving measure hits the people who spent $200 to buy a flagship keyboard. :)

And yes, I agree the claims they make about the profiles being stored on the keyboard are very misleading.
The profiles might even be technically stored on the keyboard. But the dumbed down keyboard does not have the means to do anything with them. They could only be downloaded and used by Synapse running on another computer.

Of course all of this is just my opinion and not a fact. 🙂
gdpr.yeah
Of course all of this is just my opinion and not a fact. :)

And it seems my opinion might have been wrong. I downloaded some code from one of the open razer guys and hacked away to see if anything could be done (at least static color should work even with a dumb keyboard, right?) and I got lucky and managed to not only get static display to work, but was also able to trigger breathing mode without Synapse. This was a surprise and does not match with what I read before.

But before I jump to any more conclusions I will do some more research as the matter seems to be more complicated than originally expected.

That would be the case of older gen products designed for Synapse 2, because Synapse 2 effects were a mix of firmware and software implementation. We moved away from that for the reasons stated above. For products exclusively on Synapse 3, the only effect on-board is Spectrum Cycling... we use the saved resources (we actually added a bit more) to implement a macro execution engine on hardware, and dedicated storage space for keymaps and macros (look for "hybrid storage" on the feature list).

So, at the end, it doesn't metter what ALL users want but what you (company) want. Is that keyboard made for company or for users? I am confused now. Hybrid approach is much better than this new one, and all users think the same. If I can't store on-board lighning effect after paying 150+ EUR for keyboard, I have to switch to other company. Very disappointment.

So far, my new devices have relieved my concerns. Which leaves me disappointed with Razer. I have been a fan of Razer since I had picked up a Deathstalker (which I later upgraded to a Deathstalker Chroma).

Now, my lighting settings are persistent across all computers that I use, and I can use my keyboard, mouse, and Balteus (lighted mouse pad) on my corporate laptop without having to install any software.

Well, its been a good run, but I think its best that we see other people. Hopefully we can still be friends. Don't worry, you will be fine, there are plenty of fish in the sea.

Same issue here on normal Razer Huntsman. Very disappointing...

Same issue here, very disappointing. Thinking of returning it...
I bought into razer loving it. But this kind of an issue on the Huntsman elite is just sad. I bought this shitty 200 dollar keyboard thinking it would work with my mac. I even wen over to windows on Parallels to get synapse 3 but lighting does not save. Sad.
gdpr.yeah
The effects are already on the board. What I have seen with my own eyes are wave, chroma cycle, static, starlight, breathing and reactive. Not sure how many more there are.

Its just about adding some way to configure this default/offline mode or whatever you want to call it in Synapse.

Please can you share solution you found? I think everyone here will be thankful 😃
yeah, I wish razer can make it that we can save lighting into the onboard memory/cloud storage
My Razer Huntsman elite just came in today and I was super disappointed with how misleading their description was when talking about on-board memory. I paid $225 (including shipping) for this keyboard only to find out I can change the lightning effect when I plug it into anything else without synapse 3. I’m so bummed out as this was my only Christmas gift and I waited over almost 3 weeks just for it to come in. Had I simply known it wouldn’t store my lightning profiles on the keyboard I would have bought a different keyboard. I’d still buy a Razer but a different keyboard nonetheless. Now I can’t even return it sadly, so upset, I have to wait till my birthday just to pick a different keyboard 😞

I am afraid few people will find my solution helpful. I essentially patched openrazer to support this keyboard. Openrazer is a linux driver for razer keyboards. I also contributed the patch, but it has not yet made it into the released version of openrazer.
where is the Razer technical team?
No technical personnel from razer is replying here. Why is it so hard to get it done
Yup, dragged ,my profile onto one of the memory slots. Still doesnt work after turning off Synapse. There isnt a save button for any changes you made in the software and sometimes i found the settings is still in the previous stage when I reopen the software...
Im having the same issue, when my synapse is closed i cant cycle the profiles.
i have 3 profiles total
Having the same problem... Trying to keep this thread alive, surely if Razer have it sorted it out on some devices they can release a patch/update to fix all this.
