Razer synapse 2.0 v 1.88 is broken on Mac.

If you have version 1.87 and your Razer keyboard or mouse is woking, DO NOT UPGRADE to v1.88.

Hi guys,

Thanks alerting us about the issues you’ve been experiencing with the Synapse 2 app. Can you PM me the version number so I can check my resources for workarounds and help you escalate your concern to the software team.

been going on for a bit now. just really causing hell in the backend processes of my computer. ive had to use terminal to completely remove elements of synapse to try and get it to stop relaunching itself over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. this has been going on for months.

Hello, the OP was 8 months ago but all the replies started recently. The replies are about a new problem (for some) that began around Sept 1, 2023. It’s as if a certificate expired or the update server is disconnected or misconfigured. A fellow on Reddit suggests the update server is trying to update clients to 1.88 when unsupported. This occurs with Synapse 2 v1.84 in 10.9 and 10.11 and Synapse 2 v1.87 in 10.11. The updater crashes every 15 seconds and this goes on for hours then may abruptly stop and then start again hours later. Do click the drop down and enter offline mode however it takes hours or days before the updater crashing stops, and then try to avoid rebooting.

There is also some advice that is not really correct: that the device works without the Razer driver or any driver with onboard settings, that the updater crashing every 15 seconds is not a system drag (be prepared for an occasional memory leak with the Synapse control panel left open), or a third party driver may work, or Synapse 2 works in offline mode - none if this is accurate for gaming but for basic activities its a solution. Razer drivers occasionally malfunction in offline mode, eventually the updater crashing will resume or one needs to go online to get the driver or control panel to load, which starts the updater crashing all over. Bootcamp may be the only real option.

This is just terrible and legacy Mac Razer users are done without the update server; A proper end of life announcement is in order. If you do wish to install in 10.11 then avoid 1.87 and stick with 1.84 so you wont have the control panel launching every 15 seconds and then move the nag to the edge of the screen.

Just one question: does anyone have 1.87 or 1.88 running stable in 10.13, 10.14 etc. For which OS is 1.88 qualified.

does it affect the connection ?

Hello Rayxae, if your device and OS would be supported by the driver, for the older Mac OS the trick to install is change the computer date back to June 2022 and then correct date back to today after installation. The Razer updater crashing in the background every 15 seconds affects the netgraph and overall system responsiveness. You can connect to login (odd concept for a driver to work. Software development 101: option to disable update) but after login the user profile fails to load and the server causes crashes and severe instability so the best advice to to look for alternative solutions. Looking at your thread from last week the site moderator provided inaccurate advice and quickly closed the thread

Big Sur 11.17.10, Synapse v1.87

is there a way to kill RzDeviceEngine or RzUpdater?

Force Quit doesn’t work and instead opens it.

Logging in makes it crash because it can’t load my profile.

Trying to uninstall it makes crash and restart and flash Profile in the top corner over and over again.

I’ve got it stable by installing it and not logging in, and not using my mouse.

RIP Naga Epic Chroma :(

would love an update or an uninstaller but if wishes were horses, we’d all take a ride

Razer update server is still disabled / misconfigured. can no longer use Synapse 2 v1.84.2 or Synapse 2 v1.87.1 with Mac OS 10.9 or 10.11. please fix the update server so that the Razer updater stops crashing every 15 seconds. makes gaming impossible. PS usually the driver or control panel wont even load without going online, so trying to work offline is not a solution, and once you go online the driver loads but could be waiting six hours or 3 days before the updater stops crashing every 15 seconds while trying to update, and then rebooting will start the process over again

I’m having the same issue with Profile popping up, the app opening and closing even when its turned off.  I could really use a solution to this.

hello 449123, you didn't say your OS. if you can run v1.84 instead of 1.87 then you wont get the control panel loading & moving itself to the forefront every 15 seconds. when 1.84 first loads it might update itself to 1.84.2 but don't let it update to 1.87. depending on the OS you may still get a nag which can be moved to the edge of the screen. look for a pop up menu and select “work offline” and you might have to select work offline a few times before the app responds correctly. then you will still have the updater crashing and that may lead to a RAM leak if the control panel is open. eventually the updater might abruptly stop trying (crashing) and this may occur after 6 hours or 6 days. later the updater may resume crashing. if the updater stops crashing then you want to avoid rebooting because the driver tends to not load and the only way to get the driver to load is to launch the control panel i.e. let the driver log in which will cause the updater issue to resume (may take a few attempts to launch the control panel if the updater is crashing in the background). this is a server side config issue which started Aug 31. to Razer its one thing to stop supporting an old OS, app or device but its UNCOOL to unplug the update server causing everything to break. also worth noting weather this was deliberate or mis-configuration by Razer, since Aug 31 you may no longer save or retrieve your profile (mouse & keyboard settings), so that’s why you select offline mode and the profile is saved to disk but overall offline mode works poorly. another observation: the keyboard Ornata Chroma can enter the system to pre-boot (system picker, single user mode) when it was configured by Synapse but for some reason pre-boot failed when the driver was removed even though driver absence shouldn’t matter during pre-boot (so don't reset PRAM unless your sure the default partition still works. if you need single user mode it may be set from terminal before reboot, and for system picker or recovery mode not sure, there probably is a setting from terminal, but just have a legit Apple KB if you get stuck). Razer devices have poor response without the Razer driver but you can still use the driver to set color etc.. to download v1.84 search for Synapse 2 v1.83.16 and the link gives 1.84.

Thanks for your response.  I’ve installed 1.84.2.  I’m running Monterey 12.7.2.  Immediately after install my mice showed in the razer control panel but “profile” kept popping up and closing.  I selected ‘go offline’ but you couldn’t tell if it really did go offline or not.  I closed synapse, reopened and now don’t see the mice. I can’t log out the profile either. I know synapse isn’t supposed to run on monterey but I needed to try.  I have  better touch tool installed but I’m not sure if it’ll work the way I need it to and I’m going to try Karabiner.  If those don’t do what I need I’m just getting logitech gear.

using a third party driver will be ok for basic use but for gaming you need a proper driver for best responsiveness, so dont listen to paid influencers that say all you need is the on board settings

I’m not using it for gaming. Its for radiology imaging/manipulating the images through hot-keys.  I’m actually trying to get this to work on a radiologist’s workstation.  He’s running an old mac os that supported razer but needed a new station and moving him to a different set of mice was going to be painful so I wanted to exhaust all efforts to get this working on his station.  I’m trying Karabiner right now as it at least identifies the mice whereas Better Touch Tools seems more kluge.  Any other suggestions would be welcome.

if the profile kept popping up then 1.84.2 may have been set to auto update to 1.87. at least on 10.11 i was able to prevent update and run 1.84.2 somewhat stable albeit with the Razer updater crashing every 15 seconds. but not happy with lamer companies turning off the requisite cloud to save a buck. sometimes the profile settings would disappear if the IP address changed causing the app to logout. in terms of offline mode that's why i was saying you may have to select that a few times before it takes but eventually you would see some small text on the mid right side that says something like offline mode, so you may have to try even 10 times, and same with just launching the control panel. for 3rd party take a look at USB Overdrive, Steermouse and for keyboards also Keyboard Maestro. you should be able to to map keys and buttons but i sort of question reliability overall without drivers. if the mouse disappears probably just have to unplug and back in and wake from sleep on Mac always iffy

So the only fix I found after tons of trial and razer being dumb is.

  1. After logging in to your computer, click the Razer icon to open Razer Synapse.
  2. Once you see all your connected devices and profiles, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of your screen.
  3. Go to System Preferences > General.
  4. In the General settings, navigate to the “Login Items” tab.
  5. Find “Razer USA Ltd” in the list of login items and disable it.
  6. Minimize Razer Synapse.
  7. The next time you turn off your computer or need to make changes in Synapse, remember to enable “Razer USA Ltd” in the login items menu.
