Why does my signal bar has a X on it?

Im in New Zealand but I bought this phone from amazon, It's been a month when I'm having this problem, I tried contacting my carrier they can't do anything. When I turned on my mobile data, the X will disappear but when I turn off my mobile data it will appear again. I can send text message but i cannot call anyone. Sometimes my friends contact me but mostly they can't because of my problem right now. Someone help me pls.
