Core X or Core V2 with Stealth 4K verse 15" Advance?

Hi Guys,

I am planning on buying a Razer 4K either Blade or considering the Stealth and I'm started to look at the 13" 4k as an option for portability but then would add an eGPU for playing games with an UW display when I am home since I would most likely do most of my gaming at home.

Any thoughts on this as I have watching countless videos that suggested that the graphics model Stealth basically sucks for current games unless you use the eGPU, and of course the other question do all game just work with the eGPU or not? Another thought is would I even get better performance with an EGPU and say the desktop 2080 card verse the RTX2080 or 70 built into the Advance Blade?

Thoughts and comments appreciated

With 1080ti which is similar raw performance with rtx2080 it would be look like this compared to Blade rtx 2070, 2080 and my 2080 Blade 15 2018 Core setting. You’ll be bottlenecked a lot with ultrabook physical (cpu) performance. With stealth 2019 and 2080 maybe you’ll get Blade rtx2060 performance. There’s also TB3 bandwidth limitation that you’ve to face on core (eGPU) setting, to match Blade 15 rtx 2080 performance you’ll need rtx2080ti on your core with Blade 15 8750H cpu for less bottleneck.

Ok Joikansai - so in layman's terms my take away is Yes you can do it but you would need to overbuy on the GPU for the Core, but even doing so you will still run into bottlenecks on Stealth CPU and bandwidth limitations going over TB3 to the eGPU.

So unless I really wanted to portability or I just couldn't wait for the Blade 15 4K version stay with the Blade as the best solution between the 2.

Just get the best Blade 15 model you can. The performance from their internal GPU's will outperform a Stealth + eGPU for much less money. The only downside is that it's going to be less portable.

The newer Blade Stealth suffers from driver incompatibility issues with eGPU's (even Razer's own eGPU's) so that you have to reinstall the laptop's graphics drivers every time you unplug from the eGPU. I would say you should just get the Stealth without the MX150, but then you only get 8GB of RAM, which isn't really enough for gaming.

If you absolutely have to get something right away, I think the best option might be one of the 2018 Blade Stealths. They are less expensive, thinner, have 16GB of RAM, work very well with eGPU's, and have QHD screens, which make a lot more sense than 4K on something so small.

Thanks for your feedback and the information you supplied is very helpful. Given this feedback on the thread and everyone's comments I am going to go with the 2019 15" Blade and either the 2070 4K (assuming it starts shipping in the next 2-3 weeks) or the 1080P version. If I go 1080P does it make sense to do 2070 or 2080 and would you really see that much more money to justify the extra cost?

The 2080 will still help you reach the 144hz refresh rate of the 1080p screen. Besides, it doesn't look like you can get a 4k screen with the 2080.

Correct the highest you can go is 2070 with the 4K. The 4K screen is appealing to me for work to be honest so what I can do when I am doing website work is change the "Scale and Layout" settings from say 200% down to 125 or 150 and what I get then is basically then more screen real estate to look at a rendered web page next to say a page of code and easily see changes side by side without having then to move windows or desktops around. While text is smaller it does give me more room to move windows around, while at 1080P everything is already at 100%.
