Razer Core X + Mac + h.265 video + RX VEGA 56 + noise

This question has many parts so I'm mostly asking because I think there are chances of finding other users with similar experiences here. It's probably more of a Mac OS drivers/AMD question but here goes: When I play h.264 video at 4K the Vega 56 hums along at regular noise levels. When it's h.265 the fans on the card spin up to high speed/noise.
  • 2018 Mac Mini (32GB RAM, 6-core i7 model) with Mac OS Mojave
  • Razer Core X
  • MSI AMD Vega 56 Air Boost
  • VLC 3.0.3
I realise h.265 is more GPU intensive than h.264 but the difference is like night and day! Has anyone else got this issue?

... I might add that playing 4K h.265 10-bit HDR using the Mac Mini's integrrated graphics works fine, and the machine is pretty silent.

What player are you using and does it spin up immediately or does it take a bit? I'm downloading some h265 and will try it on my setup...

I think I discovered the culprit. I am using VLC as player, since it has the best HDR tone mapping (normally I use Plex but their HDR tone mapping is just wrong). In order for tone mapping to work, the VLC video output module must be set to OpenGL, but I realised there are two OpenGL versions. I simply switched from "Mac OS X Open GL Ouput" to "Core Animation Open GL Layer (Mac OS X)" in the VLC advanced options. This results in far lower GPU load.

Okay, I downloaded a h265 video and played it with and without the Razer X. I have this Razer X plus Vega 64 eGPU setup, not exactly what you have but close. I also played in in VLC and had made that change after coming across this thread on The VideoLAN Forums. Glad that it is working for you now...
