Is 8GB VRAM really enough for the 3080?

With game developers now having 12GB of VRAM on the consoles, will they use it, making our 8GB 3080’s obsolete? I’m ready to buy today if Razer had even a 12GB 3080 option, but at the moment, I don’t see any wiggle room for future-proofing from Razer. This is especially important for 4K and QHD.

Continued since Razer won’t allow posts longer than 6 lines without saying “Access Denied”.
Nvidia is even offering the 3060 with 12GB of VRAM and the 3080 with 16GB. So why is razer, who pride themselves on taking no compromises, compromising with only 8GB?

There’s no 3080 with 12gb vram existing, it’s 8 or 16gb option on mobile and desktop 10gb. For now you can preorder blade pro 17 3080 with 4K 120Hz according specs sheet it comes with 16gb vram.
However for QHD (1440p) gaming I don’t think you’ll 8gb vram, I play with 3070 8gb vram cyberpunk (which’s apparently eat a lot vram on 4K), but hardly to max even 6gb with ultra ray tracing, not tested 4K yet though because it’s unplayable with 3070 Desktop gpu. Considering 3080 mobile use similar ddr4 (non x like on desktop 3080) with 3070 desktop I’m assuming the both has around similar performance I don’t think you’ll need more than 8gb vram.
About console, you meant ps5 has 12gb vram? If yes I never heard that, it’s different between pc and console they don’t have dedicated vram (maybe) all allocated with CPU as far I know. And from nvidia ces keynote 3060 laptops is 30% faster than ps5 gpu performance so if it’s true with 3080 you’ll be safe until new next gen console I think.

I’m really not sure I’m convinced. At 1080p, Far cry 5 and AC Valhalla already take 6GB, as these worlds get larger and more detailed, they will take more memory, especially in the higher resolutions. And yes, the PS5 and the series X have 16GB of shared memory, so I feel devs will push these consoles to their limits while our 8GB won’t be future proof for the next 3 years.

As I mentioned if you’re not confident there’s Blade pro 4K with 16gb vram, this’s only option available for preorder. Console is different with vram on PC, it’s ddr ram that has 16gb and vram allocated from there sharing with the cpu similar with AMD APU mechanism depends on gaming it’ll be different but not full 16gb ram.
Did you really check vram allocation on those titles, didn’t you maybe wrongly read ram usage instead vram? It’s because I ended both titles using 8gb vram system, far cry (4K high) was 2080 and Valhalla 3070 (1440p Ultra), I don’t think it eats 8gb vram, especially on 1080p.

I was reading the VRAM from the games graphic menus. I’ve also confirmed with MSI afterburner that they take about 6GB of video memory on 1080p so I can imagine on 4K they’d use all 8 and be throttled. This was with them both on max settings. Far Cry also had the enhanced texture pack. I hope that they offer at least one 15” option with 16Gb to put my mind at ease. I hope to fire up a 3080 with a 4K monitor but I also need a laptop more portable than the 17”. I know other manufacturers will be offering their laptops with the 16Gb variant on their 15” laptops.
Even if you get a 15.6'' with RTX 3080 16 GB it will be capped @ 80-135 watts, only the 17.3'' with RTX 3080 16 GB will give you the full 150 watts on certain models. See link:
