2021 Razer Blade 17 Pro (RZ09-0406CE63-R3U1) Not Receiving Adequate Power From 330w Razer Power Adapter

Context:

I suspected my original 230w charger was malfunctioning as it was having an intermittent charging issue with my Blade 17 2021. I looked to purchase a higher wattage charger so the charger does not have to overheat and burn itself out like the original did. I posted multiple threads on both Razer and Reddit asking whether the Razer 280w and 330w were compatible with my laptop with close to no replies. Here is the link if you are interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/razer/comments/14y9sxk/are_the_330w_and_280w_adapters_compatible_with/

I really shouldn’t have fallen for this but I did. I even did research and found the same problem happening with the Blade 14:

https://www.reddit.com/r/razer/comments/14cuqi4/blade_14_not_pulling_full_power_from_330w_charger/

However I still decided to gave Razer a chance and bought the adapter. Easy to say I am extremely disappoint in myself.

Problem:

When plugged in, Synapse raises a warning indicating insufficient power and locks the custom performance option, disabling CPU and GPU boosting. Not only that, I found the GPU only pulling a maximum of 40 watt underload, *rendering* mid to high graphic games completely unplayable.

I am unsure about the source of the problem:

  • It could be a hardware compatibility issue, since someone is also experiencing the same thing with their 2021 Blade 14 (2nd link). The SlimQ 330w charger also does the same with their 14. The unfathomable part is someone on Reddit told me they use the 330w SlimQ with their 2020 230w Blade with no problem (1st link), so it could just be a 2021 model thing?
  • It could also be a Synapse software issue since lots of 2020 Blade 15 owners have been experiencing the warning message since June, even though they are using their original chargers. The Blade 14 Reddit post also happened to be posted in June after the problematic Synapse update, so these could be connected. As of now there seems to be no fixes from Razer for the Blade 15 crisis.

Next steps:

I feel trapped. My options seem limited and uncertain.

  • I will most likely return the 330w charger. Given the problem might not be fixable with a Synapse software update any time soon or at all, I think it will be better if I return it before the return period runs out.
  • I could risk buying the 330w SlimQ charger. The problem being I have mixed information; some claiming that it works while the Blade 14 post claims it doesn’t.
  • I could buy another 230w from Razer. This will most likely work fine with my laptop, but I doubt it will last long. There have been many complaints online about the 230w charger and how quickly it burns out. From my personal experience it wasn’t any better. I do not know about how the 240w SlimQ will perform since it is even smaller in size in comparison with the Razer 230w (meaning more heat probably), but it could be worth looking into.

It seems as if I have to test the depth of the river by dipping money in it no matter what. If I do not get any useful replies in the coming week I will be returning the charger.

TR;DR: What the title says, whether the problem is hardware or software is unknown. I have no idea what to do next except for returning the charger and continue my suffering. I suggest reading the full thing since there are lots of details and unanswered questions.

To be honest I am kinda very upset that razer nor anyone else has bothered to respond to you or some of the same other posts of this as I am currently have this exact same issue same as 18 other people I found online. OP have you found out the fix or stuck like me

Nope, no solution.

I returned the 330W Razer because I didn't want a useless $300 brick sitting around.

I tried out the SlimQ 240W but unfortunately it also triggered the same error, so I returned that as well. Their customer support was very understanding and attentive throughout the whole process though, definitely would recommend for other brands of laptops.

Lastly I bought the OEM 230W Razer and the error did not show. It still runs hot as hell and the battery percentage still drops when I have long game sessions. If this one fails within a year or so I’m giving up on my laptop. My Razer mouse wheel gave out in a year and I have two whole threads on their headset. Paid the premium but only bought myself stress for 2 whole years. Found out I indeed am not a masochist.

Whether the problem is software or hardware or both doesn’t really matter anymore because either way Razer has their hands dirty. The error shows because the laptop cannot recognize the charger and therefore limits the power draw to prevent potential overload. Could be a tactic to force people to only buy OEM. No idea why it happens with their own products but the lack of customer support didn't help. If it's hardware compatibility, you can’t do much about it unless they churn out new models. If its software/Synapse related, the chances of them fixing it is low and we won't know how long it would take or how else to test it.

I would say return your 330W if you have no use for it and if you still can. Get an OEM one if you need to. If that fixes whatever issue you're having, great, you better hope that it lasts at least a year. If not, could be the battery and in very rare cases, the motherboard.

All in all, I learnt that money doesn’t guarantee anything. What one needs is knowledge. I’ll be doing good research for my future desktop.

Sorry for the essay and best of luck.

Wait so you getting the oem charger fixed it for you? The error dosent show and it pulls more than 40w?

The error never showed even with my original OEM (laptop came with a 230W), only with the 330W Razer and 240W SlimQ. The OEM can pull full load.

I wanted to switch out my original because I was having a problem where the Laptop would switch between Plugged-in and On Battery rapidly. I found that the power supply was the culprit of that problem for a lot of people. The plug-battery seems to be fixed for me for now, but I don't know how long it would stay this way. I bought the 330W first because it wouldn't get as hot and last longer (if it worked like it should have in the first place.)

If you are getting the error with your OEM, does your laptop happen to be a Blade 15 model? If yes, they had that problem a while ago back in June but I think it was fixed with a Synapse update (more evidence Razer is in full control of this and doing it consciously.)

My blade is the same as yours but mid 2021. I don’t have mine switching between battery and ac power just straight up shows Not Receiving Adequate Power from OEM Charged and 2 amazon 230w chargers. Which one works for you. I have tried pretty much everything apare from a replacement from razer

I am not too sure then. If ur OEM used to work properly and one day freaked out then it could be the problem. From what I have seen online, the Razer 230W has some serious life span issues. Lots of people complain about how hot it gets and how they have to replace one every year or few month even. Although the problems we face aren't quite the same, the charger killing itself with heat and losing power conversion performance could potential lead to both of them. The amazon ones not working is no surprise, but I don't think I need to talk about all that again.

I think it would be worth a try to go for the OEM. If it still doesn't work then the problem goes deeper, and you’ll have to reach out and get dedicated support from Razer.

I know this thread is old but I had a similar issue with my 2022 17’" blade I had to unplug the battery and reset the cmos by removing the cmos battery hold the power button with both batteries unplugged then put the batteries back in and boot up the system then I plugged it in and everthing was okay.
