As technology improves, we see newer, better ways to interact with software and the world around us. We started with mechanical switches and buttons, to command lines and graphical input devices. We graduated to touch screens on mobile phones and gestures, to voice command and now we're entering a stage of virtual and augmented reality. Controllers on consoles with every generation finds a new way to interact and play games, but the pc still remains staunchly mouse and keyboard.

What's next? Will we be using keyboards and mice 20 years from now to play games? It's hard to say. Something as simple as touch screen completely changed the way mobile phones are used, but touch screen wasn't a new thing. It was simply utilized better and backed up by better tech. I'd love to know your thoughts in this week's Thread of the Week.

AI and VR maybe is our future but nothing beats using keyboard and mouse or controller to play a game. maybe a razer vr headset will do??hmmm

I wish to have a less wire bounder device and few electricity demand in the near future!

I really like where the technology is headed to. But mice and keyboards are a standard, we wont probably get rid of them too soon, maybe only add features over features and better designs. The futuristic ideas of the world from games and shows i got my hand on are amazing, i mean how about Razer Become Human? That's something to think about.

Some things stay traditional, like cooking for example. It's always the same, we just have different ways to do it with better technology. And that's what I think is in store for the pc. The pc experience is one of a kind, and it will likely stay the way it is, with newer technology allowing users to more conveniently do what they want to do. There will obviously be major technological breakthroughs in the future, but for now, the pc will stay the pc that we know.

Also this is my first post, I am really excited to be a part of the Razer community. Thanks!

I'd like to see Razer redo / reboot what was once google glass

Something I can wear and use my voice to activate. And in the hands of razer, I can see it becoming a part time gaming peripheral that can do cool stuff like .... catch pokemon and maybe even do some VR games like "Tower Tag" using any real world location as the "map" you battle on

A device that would trick all senses at once like vr, is yet to be discovered.the eyes are easily "fooled" than the rest of human gamer senses of should I say that the hearing is.either way imagine a detective game that you are depending on your nose or touch.that would feel totally new.

I feel like keyboard, mouse and controller will be the preferred input method for years to come. There's no way around it. Tactile feedback and physical controls are far more superior than any other input method currently. It's fun to play with touch or non-tethered motion controls, but they don't provide any type of feedback.

One method of control that is extremely interesting is full body simulation. Whether it be something like the Razer racing simulator, or full stand up rigs that have a moving platform underneath coupled with a faux gun and body sensors that provide force feedback when you're shot, etc. seems like where things might be heading. It's going to take a really long time to get there but I don't know if they'll ever replace traditional input methods.

I'm hoping we stick with the Mouse and Keyboard, although I hope wireless technology improves further and we see more wireless gaming related products come out onto the market. I like having tactile feedback, and I don't think I would like using something like a flat touchscreen keyboard.

Analog gaming keyboards would be neat too for the future.

VR was around in the 90s. Didn't stand much of a chance. Currently it is back again but it is not really better than back then. Yes, better performance but generally very heavy, powerful VR headsets need a permanent power cable and they are clumsy too. The MS Holo Lens would be realistic but there is more to it than that.
Do you know the movie "Gamer"? Yes, that's how I imagine gaming to be in 10 years. A VR room where the whole body is a controller. That would be my idea.
Everything else is a waste of time. But the keyboard and mouse will surely remain with us. I hope so. 🙂

The level that technology has reached these days is indeed huge, but it is slow. i'm very curious about what else we'll experience in the future. The bad thing is that any new technology released is pricy.

I might see a bit far, but I think that one day tech dev will bring a new type of interface.
The way I see it, it'll be a brain to PC connexion where you'll just have to think about an action to make it ingame.
So will be the return from the machine, directly send to your brain.

It's a bit scary how people will be linked to a machine but I think in 20 years, younger generations would see things another way.

NeuroSky (and a couple others) are doing this right now and it's pretty crazy. Kind of scary in a way because it makes you wonder if they'll be able to read your thoughts or better yet, control your thoughts and inject things into your brain. Yikes!

Ah! I do research in HCI (Human-computer Interaction)!
Specifically, I study the viability of real-time captioning on head-worn displays. Think Live Transcribe on Google Glass.

It's mind boggling cool. Head-worn displays (HWD) definitely have their use cases, primarily where taking your phone out is cumbersome (walking, carrying groceries, any time where your hands are occupied), or when phones are disruptive to social norms (conversations).
