Avoid BIOS 1.03 for the 2020 Stealth (RZ09-03102)

Updating to this bios will remove the ability for the CPU to turbo boost in Windows 10. I've done several clean installs from W19 1909 to 20H2, and the issue persists across all 3 major W10 versions.

I'll pay a bounty if anyone can get me a backup of their bios from their 2020 Stealth on an older bios version.

Thanks!

Update: We are already testing BIOS 1.04, and I will have a Beta version available soon. I will be sending the Beta version to those that sent me a PM with their ticket numbers. Do note that we will limit how many users can test it this time to be on the safer side.

@lukeofthetauri As far as I know, there is no safe way to roll back BIOS versions. Even if you get an older version, it's build to stop the installation if the tool detects a newer build. That said, we already have a team looking into this after receiving reports from @m_bliss11 and other users experiencing similar issues.

@MrTolli @Fordringwang We are still investigating this in search of the possible cause/s, but you can opt to send it in for an RMA and have our repair team perform the rollback. There isn't a need to reset to factory settings if you are still using the laptop as this is clearly related to the said BIOS update.

To everyone else experiencing the same issue. Please PM me your ticket number, if you have one already, or the serial number of your laptop along with screenshots detailing the issue. I will be forwarding all the relevant information to the team leading the investigation.
Yes it will definitely drain battery faster if unplugged as it will not throttle down lower than it should. Sorry to hear continued users reporting the issue but reassuring to know that I was not crazy after I updated mine. Really looking forward to a fix as I am hoping that the update will include Intel Firmware updates so that we can update past 1909.

Glad that speed stepping fix is helping people in the meantime I know that it is not the best fix but it will at least provide some performance increases. You are still unable to get up to 3.9 as the laptop is supposed to (although only for a few moments as it will throttle down once it hits that peak) but it is better than nothing. A hard lesson in waiting for updates to iron themselves out before updating. Will definitely be waiting for a bit in the future for razer updates on this system and doing homework first.
For anyone who is watching this thread: my ticket was updated today stating that this is now a confirmed issue, and that they are working on a fix, but there's no ETA at this time.

To everyone else that has not yet sent me their ticket numbers, please do so I can check and make sure that you get access to the fix as soon as it is available. Also, note that our Support Team has been advised not to RMA affected laptops, so the previous offer of having our Repair Team perform the rollback is no longer an option.
Its fixed, look out for the email from Razer Support. Thanks @Razer.Caziel for all the help. I will be evaluating the update this week.
Hi guys,

Just to let you all know it's not only the turbo boost function that's being affected, it's also package c-states. The cpu doesn't go below 3 watts on idle while it's meant to drop to >0.5 watts. This just means higher idle temps and faster battery drain. I already noted this on my support ticket I sent to razer but just wanted to let others know.
You are right however the discrete graphics card problem is actually from an Nvidia driver problem. Check what driver version you're on, try using driver version 452.06. I get 6-10 hours battery life even with this CPU problem, if it was fixed I'm sure it'd be closer to 8-12 hours.

Also another fix to the cpu turbo boost not working without disabling speedstep in bios:

I used "Throttle Stop" and enabled SpeedShift EPP. Enabling speedshift, which is an alternative to speedstep means your cpu can turbo boost again and also it won't come with the downside of disabling speedstep, which is your cpu runs at 100% all the time.

Enabling speedshift alone won't cause any risk HOWEVER it goes without saying don't tinker with anything you don't know. I won't take responsibility for any damage caused, and neither will Razer.

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION:

Here is a text guide:

Here is the exact time stamp on how to enable speedshift in throttlestop:

*EDIT: time stamp got removed while embedding: SKIP TO 3:23
Great! Thanks for the update Caziel!
So far the updates working fine! Thank you so much @Razer.Caziel for the help. I'll notify support if any new problems pop up but the issues in this thread are fixed!

What on earth, no email for me

I'm pretty sure you're one of the first people that should receive the BIOS update. I'll reach out to the team and see what's causing the holdup.

I would also like to take a moment to thank everyone for cooperating. It's been a rollercoaster ride for all of us, and I'm happy that it all worked out in the end.
I'll add to the confirmations that 1.04 fixed this for me, and I don't see the weird issue you are seeing R3DH3R0. Mine's back to being its awesome laptop-self again.
Ok so I just did a clean install from an iso, with nothing installed and idle my cpu usage is 0-2%. I installed geekbench and was pulling higher numbers than previously. My turbo boost also isn't stuck, right now the computer is running between 1.45-1.56ghz. Now to see what program was causing the issue. Or perhaps it was my windows install
If you disable Speed Stepping in bios you will get 3.5ghz. That was the only workaround I was able to find while troubleshooting before I exchanged mine

This is a stellar response.

It's frustrating to see the same old issues with BIOS and inexplicable CPU throttling year after year, but it's refreshing to see a support response that's both knowledgeable about the issue and lets us know that it's something that is actively being looked into. Thanks @Razer.Caziel !
Hi @Razer.Caziel

I am experiencing the same issue and have pm-ed you my details.

Thanks!
@ramirocaro92 Yup, this is due to the CPU not turboing. You can use the fix listed above by @m_bliss11 and this'll restore your FPS.
You can do what he suggested now, its what I'm doing as well to get around this for the time being.

Given that we've got official response in this thread, I think its safe to say a fix would be coming sooner, rather than later but you never know....
Same issue here, since the BIOS update from 1.01 to 1.03... found myself the workaround, disabling speed step to maintain at least up to 3,5 ghz for games. But good to see others tried the same method.

Is this safe to do for now?

.. safe, but I assume that it empties the battery faster (unplugged).

Does anyone know why my razer stealth 2020 cant show the display of my external monitor on nvidia panel control? I want to enable the G sync compatible but nvidia control panel doesnt show the display option. I have a acer predator monitor(Nvidia Gsync compatible) connected via Usb C/thunderbolt to DP.

Can the razer stealth supports external monitors connected directly to the thunderbolt port?

Hi there,

that's another topic, but - the display output comes through the Intel Chip, which doesn't support G-Sync. That's normal for laptops with dedicated GPUs, that they don't support G-Sync. All data has to pass through the Intel Chip to get sent to Display. 2 - Try to find your second display with Intel Graphics Command Center. For me all options like enabling 144hz for external display are in there (and not via Nvidia Control Panel). USB-C to DisplayPort cable works fine for me, WQHD@144hz.
They've pulled the update, so that's good to see.
Hey ramirocaro92 - you need to create a ticket on Razer's support page.

https://mysupport.razer.com/app/warranty-support/

You need to enter your laptop serial number and then go through chat support and a ticket will be made. Ask your support rep what your ticket is and then you should be good.

@Fordringwang You have to be careful where you post your ticket numbers. Please send those to me via PM instead.

@rinthos I'll be checking your PM in a bit.
Toss me in this boat too: called into support a few days ago and they sent me an article for downgrading the bios..... on intel desktop motherboards.... that were declared EOL in 2019.... Nice.

Forwarding the ticket ID to you @Razer.Caziel , nice to see that this might actually get somewhere.
