Razer Blade 16 Mini-LED local dimming

Userlevel 2

Razer please tell me this is a defective display or its how Mini LED technology implemented in this laptop and it's considered "normal".

White objects on black that are smaller than 2cm turns grey. I recorded a video showing this problem.

Wow its been almost another month and absolutely nothing new. I honestly havent even touched my blade 16 with how disgusted i am by razers support. This is so fucking unbelievable i want to use this laptop for content creation but just cant with how shit the display firmware is. At least I have my main pc but the purpose of this laptop was to basically have it as my pc on the go since I got a nice portable charger for it too. If anyone wants this PoS dm lmao i feel like i wasted my money mane this is so fucked

Finally, the last update brought a new option for it now.
But it is obviously not working, at least on my side.
Changing Tabs will reset the value.
When switching the toggle on or off, there is no change at all, not even minimal.
There does not seem to be any Release or QA Management in place 🙈
I can imagine that we are waiting for a bios/firmwar update now to connect the toggle to the hardware.

Man I was about to buy the new 2024 16 with mini led for content creation until I saw this. May have to pass and look elsewhere now. Bummer

Based  on the below FAQs page, the 2024 model is the only one you will be able to disable local dimming.
is Razer giving up with the 2023 model issues?

That stinks for the 2023 but seems to suggest something hardware-wise had to be changed which explains the radio silence from Razer on this issue for the 2023 year.

I had returned my 2023.  I think I will try it again with the 2024 model!   Hopefully I can setup a macro or something to enable local dimming when gaming.

Whats the con of disabling local diming for me as a content creator for video editing? Is there any? or is it a good thing iam able to do that? Just trying to see what the downsides are?

You want to be able to do that for content creation.  You only want multi zone dimming for playing games or watching movies .

Razer emailed me back after a long delay and me prodding them again, they told me that they are not adding that feature to the 2023 models. If I remember correctly many owners are banding together for a lawsuit as this simply isn’t usable for content creation or design work.

I dont even know what to say anymore

Dear Razer Community and Razer Team,

As a long-time supporter and user of Razer products, I must express my profound disappointment upon learning that the new single zone dimming toggle feature has been added to the newer models but will not be made available for the 2023 Razer 16 Mercury models.

Our studio specializes in VFX for games, and we rely heavily on the accuracy and consistency of our screens for content creation. The lack of this crucial feature significantly impacts our workflow and the quality of our work. When we invested in the 2023 Razer 16 Mercury, we expected a level of support and updates that would enhance our device's functionality over time, especially for such a premium product.

Understanding that technology evolves and improvements are made is one thing, but it is quite another to feel left behind because our model will not receive updates that directly address the issues impacting our professional use. This decision not only affects our current operations but also influences our future purchasing decisions and our trust in Razer as a brand committed to its users.

We had hoped for a resolution that would allow us to continue using our Razer laptops effectively for professional content creation. Unfortunately, this news has forced us to reconsider our reliance on Razer products for our business needs moving forwards.

I think we should not stop complaining for this and we all should Join with a Class action for this because Razer is known for shit like this they can Implement this with Bios Update but they are also Lazy and they don’t want to put the Cost to do that maybe someone, Can compare if the Logic board of the 24 has any specific, Chip for Mini Led Dimming controller should be eazy to spot as chip since the Boards of both models are almost the same in terms of size and Chip arangment!

100% agree. We paid too much money to just ignore false advertising. They need to either fix this, replace my laptop with one that works of equal or greater specs, or give me my money back.

How do I tell if I have a AOU or BOE or ? display panel?

Go to Device Manager > Monitor > double click on "Generic PnP Monitor". Go to Details Tab, select "Hardware IDs" in the property drop down list.

It will say there.

I just got a new 2023 Blade 16 on amazon  that has the BOE panel (was on a great sale, and I am starting to realize why.  I tried some of the tweaks that were mentioned earlier in the post that have helped it. I also noticed that if you access the Intel Graphics command center app you can modify the color settings in there to make it look a little more acceptable.

I did notice, like someone else mentioned, that using it in HDR makes it look much better, but still…..

Also, my unit has a defective touchpad.  The clicking mechanism is unresponsive so I have to use tap gestures to do a lot of things I would normally do by depressing the touchpad.

I personally would return it or talk to razer about it, the latter of those will take a while probably. Razer is in the process of possibly giving me a full refund on mine.

Everyone go Contact Razer and press them about it, this is unacceptable for all of you with a 2023 blade 16 miniled. I’ve been talking back-and-forth with them and they will be replacing mine with a suitable newer model, which does not have these issues.

Userlevel 1

Well, since I just got mine on Amazon, I may go the razer return route, because while I can return the unit on Amazon Prime, there is no “exchange” option for a new unit. I would have to just re-order another blade 16 on amazon and now that crazy sale is over and its 1,000.00 more than the deal i just got.

Userlevel 2

Scotty, you should be able to get them to give you a working one for sure. They would much rather give those of us who don’t want to deal with the crappy false advertising working models than have us take them to court and be potentially forced to fix it for every Blade 16 user. Way more expensive. I would get on Razer ASAP if you are going that route. Just be warned that it may take a month or more before they finally get things sorted.

Everyone here experiencing issues with your 2023 mini-led blade 16 should go create a youtube video showing the issues, then send the link to Razer. This seems to be the best way to get their attention and also genuinely show the issues with our laptops. I am also trying to get them to look at this forum and see all of us with issues.

Looking forward to resolving these issues!

Go leave a comment on this youtube video which razer has definitely seen and wants me to remove with your issue and device.

Well, I tried going down the route of going through Razer support and it has been an epic fail so far.

They are trying to go to the easy route and want me to go back to Amazon and get it taken care of with them.
However, the issue is Amazon will not do an exchange or replacement of the unit and instead will only let me return it for refund and then re-purchase another one at a higher dollar amount because at the time I purchased the defective unit it was on a big sale (which means if i order it again it will be at a higher cost and who knows what defects I will get in the new unit).

If Razer doesn’t own up and try to repair this unit or allow me to send this in for replacement, I will just send it back to Amazon and be done with Razer laptops. Just will go with Asus instead (and I have dealt with their support for a hardware defect in the past and it was WAY better).

Razer's Limited Warranty states that "If an eligible claim on the Limited Warranty is received by Razer within the applicable Warranty Period, Razer will (at its sole option) either: (a) repair the Product or the defective parts at no charge, using new or refurbished replacement parts; (b) exchange the Product with a Product that is new or which has been manufactured from new or serviceable used parts and is at least functionally equivalent to the original Product." Most 2023 models should be covered by this warranty. https://www.razer.com/warranty

So Amazon was no help through this.

However, after getting the runaround from Razer support (and going back and forth like 6 times), I got them to issue an RMA for my Blade 16 for the defective touchpad.  It is on their way back to them now, and I am going to put a note in my case about the Mini LED display.

We will see how it goes.
