Blade 17 - external monitor via USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 not working | Razer Insider
Skip to main content
Just purchased this new Razer Blade 17. Connecting to an external monitor with a USB-C-to-display-port cable, and a straight display port cable. From either of the Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports. No signal detected from monitor. Whenever I plug in a monitor, NVIDIA control panel shows Optimus as the active graphics adapter. And the NVIDIA GPU becomes disabled and I'm unable to select. See screenshot.

I just used the Razer BIOS updater and updated the EC as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
@Razer.Speedcr0ss good morning!

We still have issues with external displays, and workarounds no longer work 😕

Any ideas? Are you able to escalate this, so it gets prioritized?

Thanks

Hey GipsySnake and everyone who still have an issue, please send me a PM or submit a case through this link so our Support Team can help us re-escalate each laptop's concern to our devs. I appreciate your cooperation.

Yeah it is either some driver issue, BIOS issue, or us few have defective units

I think it’s a combination of things.
At work my razer blade 17 mid 2021 with RTX 3070 works when connected to a docking station 65W, it charges and it displays suff on 2 external monitors connected to the docking station.

At home if I connect my laptop to my LG screen 5K2K which delivers 96 watts, it does not work, no image no charging - well sometimes it works like 30 seconds until some BS gets loaded (file, driver, setting, god knows) and then nothing. If I plug the power cable, everything works fine.

So thunderbolt cable from laptop to monitor PLUS power cable WORKS WELL.

BUT With the last version of the nvidia drivers it doesn’t display anything.

I believe it’s a combination of driver issues maybe with power management or thunderbolt 4 as well.
And maybe windows messing this up.

I’m on windows 11 and I made a bios update for the GPU thing.

I’m supposed to work on this machine, I can’t spend my time trying to fix things.

For my Blade 17 (22) it worked out in the strange way:

I had the same issue. Also I tried to change GPU mode to “Dedicated GPU only”. After restarting the system, GPU mode remains “NVIDIA Optimus”, but for some reason I can now use my external monitor with USB-C.

I can unequivocally verify that reverting to version 512.95 or any prior iteration, indeed RESOLVES the issue! The enigma remains, whether this enigma pertains solely to Razer's realm or is a byproduct of Nvidia's domain. Nevertheless, one can only hope for a swift rectification.

P.S. Harnessing the prowess of the Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock in harmony with my esteemed RZ09-0423x NED3-R3E1, seamlessly navigating the intricate dimensions of the Alienware AW3423DW, I find myself in a state of sheer contentment online2yu. Fortuitously, the utilization of a Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort 1.4 cable augments this symphony of technological excellence.

Wonderful. I guess I will return the laptop then because I NEED to use this with multiple high-resolution monitors and all I have working is the HDMI port. The Thunderbolt 4 ports are supposed to support DisplayPort out version 1.4 and work with the dedicated GPU...but I cant get them to output video at all. Even with using dedicated GPU only, etc
I may have to return mine too. Their support system is too complicated.

Let me know what machine you end up getting instead? 🙂
It's such a dumb problem. The laptop is amazing other than that. I dont understand how they can not have this feature working!
I am sure it is something that can be fixed with a BIOS update...
Anyone else out there having this problem? I am also wondering if it is a software/driver issue?

Yet there are no drivers available for the RZ09-0423X model on Razer's site.
That's another thing, it seems like this model doesn't have drivers anywhere... How is that possible?
If you look NONE of the 2015 models (15 inch, 17 inch, etc) have drivers available for download
Well, I went ahead and submitted a support request, so we will see how far that gets me.

Seeing that you put yours in around July 6th (a week ago), and still have no resolution, I am not getting my hopes up.
same problem.

I have tried it with several cables and on different monitors.

How long ago did you start the support ticket? I submitted mine yesterday and have yet to hear back from anyone. I got my blade 17 through Amazon so if I don't hear anything by the end of today I am just going to return it. Costs too much $$ to have quality control/support issues like this
Razer.Speedcr0ss
I've checked your case. The investigation is still ongoing, and the team is coordinating with our Internal Team/devs regarding the laptop's behavior. I've cascaded this thread to the team. Hopefully, a resolution will be available as soon.

Can you send me your case number so I can tap our Support Team?

Please submit a case too so we can collate all the users that are experiencing this USB-C port concern.

What is the schedule? I can't use my computer until then. I absolutely need a second monitor and that is really not a special requirement. Especially not for a 4,600€ notebook. If there is no immediate solution here, the notebook will go back within the return period.
I heard back from Razer support, but they want me to go through the stupid stuff like I am a non-technical idiot (after I told them I repair laptops for a living).

They said the following:

"

Though you may also check our support page link that may help fix the issue on the laptop

We just want to set your expectation that this laptop model does not yet have any BIOS update created since this is a new model release. No worries our product developer team is aware of this matter and is working hard to be able to generate one in the future though.
I'm having this issue as well. There seem to be very brief, occasional flickers where it seems like the connection is working, but it never lasts more than a second or so.
I am not taken seriously by support at all. I was now asked if I can connect my monitor via HDMI..... I will now return the notebook. And I would recommend that to everyone here! Extremely poor performance from razer.

Wow, yeah that is terrible
Got it working!!! The support rep told me to uninstall my latest drivers. And roll back to version 512.95 or lower. I am asking him when it is OK to update my drivers for game ready drivers and such. Will let you know when he replies! 🙂

Anyone else on here who still has their Blade try this?

Rollback your NVidia driver to version 512.95 or lower. This worked for me! 🙂
