I purchased the Chroma V2 yesterday and I am a bit disappointed to be honest.

The best way to describe this is that the Blackwidow Ultimate 2014 is very bright, (like a Razer product) and the Chroma V2 is dim and when I take the keycaps off it looks sort of pastel compared to blindingly bright like the BW Ultimate 2014.

I have some pictures of both side by side but they don't really do it justice because my phone wouldn't take a decent picture and sort of balanced out the differences.

Here is the Keyboard VS the individual tester. It is brighter than the keyboard itself as well.

Is this normal for the Chroma compared to the Ultimate or did I get a bad board?

EDIT: I have contacted to support and we are still trying to work on a solution. Right now the support agent said he was "engaging one of their specialists" and it may take up to a day to hear back. I don't know how much of that is true but at least the agent is past the whole "less light through the keycaps" thing.

Did you try going into synapse, and under the lighting section on the keyboard turning it up? I think they come out of the factory as mid brightness, not fully bright. That may be why it looks a little bit dull.

Well that is a little odd, Did you try to contact Razer Support? They may be able to assist you. Something may be wrong with the keyboard because i would think it would be the same brightness, if not brighter.

Hi Domination Gaming, welcome to Insider!

Thanks for sharing. Damn...that does look like a big difference. One of the reasons why I stick with the BW instead of getting a BW X is because of the difference in LED brightness. BW is just so much more vibrant. I'm wondering how much the new keycap font has to do with it, but from what I can tell it seems like the LEDs are simply not as bright as the older ones. My BW Chroma is super bright.

Can you take a pic of both BW Ultimate 2014 and BW V2 without the keycaps side by side?

I'm also wondering how it compares to BW Ultimate 2016 in terms of brightness:

I asked razer support, and they said it is normal...

the 2016 there looks marginally less bright than the V2, with the V2 being the least. I didnt get the X model either because I wanted the LEDs to be bright. I legit bought the Chroma V2 over my BW Ultimate 2014 because I wanted brighter RGB lights, but if these could be just a bit brighter, I would be content shelling out 170 for the change. Some of the chroma apps aren't working right either, and the special RGB profiles aren't as fun when it is hard to see the lights. From sitting looking at an angle, you really can hardly see them.

Apparently not. I sent a message to razer support and they said it is supposed to be less bright. He might think it is because of the keycaps, but the lights themselves are less bright. Not sure, I will reply to his message.

  7. Hey Domination Gaming,

Indeed, the Razer BlackWidow Chroma V2 is slightly dimmer than the previous generation. One of the reason for this, is the change of font letting less light passing through your keys.

Don't hesitate to send me a PM if you have any additional questions regarding your keyboard. I'll be happy to answer them.

    Cheers.

maybe because of the skinny font, instead of the fat font they used to put on, if you don't like it you can always put your old razer keycaps on the new one

I hope you don't mind a reply. I look a thing the LEDs themselves and they are less bright than those of the ultimate 2014 model and also less bright than the LED on the switch tester. Is this normal?

Are the RGB LEDs less bright than the green ones (since they have to shine many colors) and then the tester more bright than the ones on the keyboard itself because there is less interference or only one LED to power?

That is my only answer I can think of if my board isn't faulty.

    Thanks for your help,
    Brendan

Trust me, I took the keycaps off. the LEDs themselves are much dimmer than the ones on the Ultimate 2014 and the switch tester keychain that comes with the board.

I have BW Ultimate 2014 and BW Chroma and the latter is not less bright when set to static green.
From what it sounds like going off of what you guys have posted here, I guess it was a conscious decision they made. Bummed.

It would be nice if people with the V2 could confirm or deny...

Support is looking into my case. If I got a bad board (which I hope is the case) I am still in the return window with Best Buy.

I have never had any other razer keyboard, but in my opinion the keys are pretty bright and match every other one of my periphials in brightness at the max brightness.

I doubt this is the case because Gwynbleidd himself already posted that the backlight on the BW V2 is dimmer than the original. But good luck all the same. Let us know how it goes!

He posted that it is dimmer, or did he post that the keycaps let less light through?

He said it is dimmer. And also that one reason is because less light is passing through the keycaps.

But on mine, the LEDs themselves are less bright. Didn't you see the pics with no keycaps?

I think you are misunderstanding the posts lol. I agree with you and so does Gwynbleidd. The LEDs are less bright on V2. One reason is the new font. But that's only one reason, there are likely to be others, which is why the word 'one' was previously emphasized.

Yeah, I realized that after in said it, but never edited. I wish I knew the reason why they dimmed them. If they wanted it more contained, and less flashy so that it fits the sleek aesthetic with the keycap font and such, someone could simply dim the lights. So yeah, idk.

Yeah, and maybe we'll never know. I'm pretty bummed about it too because super bright and vivid LEDs was a strong advantage they had over the competitor keyboards in my opinion.
