I got a Blackwidow a couple years ago, now that's at my office at work, I've got a tournament edition at my gfs house, and a Chroma at home. I just can't ever go back to using membrane ever since the first time I used a mechanical.

Mechanical would be better choice perform much better than a membrane since is more accurate.

Mechanical. Lower actuation force makes me able to game longer

I personally use a mechanical, because it just feels better to me with the clicky sounds. I absolutely love knowing that when I type the keys are truly actuating. But even with that I expected at least a few people to say that they used membrane keyboards. If anyone does use membrane keyboards, could you inform me with what you use it for, because I haven't touched my Razer DeathStalker since I bought it

Mechanical are over-hyped IMO. I feel mechanical keyboards are either too sensitive (Cherry MX Red) for things such as typing and Blues not coming in typer-friendly half-key variants.
Membrane are usually cheaper, and I have had no issues with them failling. Maybe I just don't play rough with mine. I think if you do get a membrane switch, get a scissor switch for typing on.
I do own a laptop for school, so ths could be why I lean towards membrane, but I have tried my friend's Quickfire XT and felt no difference in my gaming.

I think however, this comes down to key-cap type. Mechanical are choc-a-block of full cap keyboards, whereas membrane have a much larger array of full, mid and chiclet keycaps. Personally, I feel chiclets are great as you can glide your finger across your keyboard with no resistance. Full keys with large contours (cough cough Poseidon Z and Logitech Orion) usually block finger movement, and inhibit typing and gaming.

Maybe it's over-hyped now, but the difference and preference for mechanical keyboards has existed well over 20 years ago. Back then I knew many a Quake players that preferred the Model M keyboards for gaming and typing.

This explosion of interest and hype is relatively new and coincides with Cherry's patent expiration and the rise of Chinese clones which existed before the expiration but now can be sold outside of China legally.
  8. I'm more for mechanical, but sometimes that *tak tak* is too loud, so my keypad is membrane.

Mechanical definitely feels alot more satisfying with the click sound even if you are using stealth versions. As for membrane, I think they are alright, and definitely better if quiet is all you need (playing at night)

    All about that mechanical

Saying that though I love the Deathstalker keyboard and would be all over a Mechanical chiclet Deathstalker Chroma

    Lmao, oh dear, this question.

As a keyboard fanatic, I understand most people are going to say mechanical here. I also prefer mechanical (Cherry MX Brown / Razer Stealth). However, some people claim to be able to type faster and more accurate on mechanical keyboards...I'm not convinced about that yet.

I play typeracer a lot and have watched some streams. Some people absolutely SHRED on membrane boards. By shred, I mean finishing races with 200+ Words Per Minute. Like Eoinmc97 mentioned earlier, fingers travel across a membrane board with less resistance than on mechanical keys with heavy contours. There are indeed some advantages to membrane, but I prefer mechanical for the tactile feel and the ease of maintenance (can take keys off and clean the board).

    For me:
    • Mechanical keyboards: fun, comfortable, suited for typing
    • Membrane: Faster, feels faster for gaming for me
Mechanical keyboards are fun to use, more suited for typing if you ask me. However, there are some membrane and scissor switch keyboards which I much prefer for gaming as they actuate really fast (Roccat Arvo and Razer Deathstalker Ultimate) compared to my Blackwidow.

There is the Apex M800 from Steelseries, that is mechanical but has a membrane style keycap which I might pick up.

@ $200 it's more expensive than Razer products, hah.

But it's the "fastest mechanical gaming keyboard in the world!"

Joking aside though, this thing actually looks pretty beasty...they considered angle ergonomics and key contour shape...that's impressive.

If only they had a tactile version, I don't think I could stand linear for typing. I like that they designed their own switch, kinda reminds me of Topre switches. But it doesn't seem like sound dampening o-rings are an option for them :|
  18. Mechanical. I love the clicky sound, the feedback is amazing and it just feels... you know... right... I have used membrane before, and it's fine for a laptop but for "Hardcore" gaming I prefer Mechanical.

For standard typing, I prefer a membrane keyboard like the one on my MacBook, but for gaming mechanical definitely takes the cake!

I'm surprised at how much I like mechanical keyboards after using a laptop with a membrane keyboard for so long. I do like both though.
