What are the issues for Linux on a Razer laptop right now?

    Hi!

    New Razor member here.

I'm desperately looking for a high-end laptop that works out-of-the-box on Linux. Since it's for my job, I need to be as productive as possible from the get go. So no time to tinker my Linux for days in order to have the mousepad working ;)

As I'm sure these kind of feedbacks would also help the Razer devs, in your experience and in all honesty, what does not work today when throwing a Linux on a Razer laptop?

    Thank you!

I love working on my Razer Blade laptop with Ubuntu 17.10 as my main OS. The development experience is amazing. The most annoying thing is when I want to share my screen or share a window during video conferences, some video conference software doesn't support it. I use Google meet religiously and thank god they support screen share... But they don't support window sharing yet (which is annoying). My company also uses JoinMe and that is not supported at all! So really my only gripe is the slow adoption of the OS from these online services... It's 2018 people!!!

    Interesting, thanks!

Had you have the chance to test screen sharing with Slack by any chance?

So screen share works with Slack but you cannot control other peoples desktop. You can only markup their desktop with a highlighter.

Another annoying thing (I forgot to mention) is that the built-in webcam jitters a bit (frame loss). I use a supported external web cam so I don't really care. I'm pretty sure there is a fix for it but I haven't had the time to fix it nor care to really.

A lot of things work well. But a few do not. The web cam doesn't work without tweaking. Getting multiple monitors to work is very doable and well-documented, but it doesn't work out of the box due to the dual graphics card.

My biggest issue has been the fans (see my recent post on this forum). They don't seem to spin up fast enough and I see temperatures consistently sit at 70 C under 20% load.

My friend tried stress testing their razer laptop on ubuntu and the CPU temperature went over 100C then the machine turned off and wouldnt turn on for about 10 minutes. Luckily it was fine, but I'm pretty sure he almost fried his motherboard.

You can't change the fan curve either (though I've seen mixed things about this on the internet)

Yes, we desperately need fan control for linux, on ubuntu my razer 2016 is always extra toasty since the fans barely spin.
