Fix for INTEL-SA-00086 Intel Management Engine Critical Firmware Update

  1. There was a previous thread asking about the INTEL-SA-00086 Intel Management Engine Critical Firmware Update:
    https://insider.razerzone.com/index.php?threads/razer-blade-14-2017-intel-sa-00086.28287/page-3

At the end of the chain, an apparent representative from Razer directs us to contact support for help with an update tool they allegedly have. I would have posted to that thread except that it is now closed for additional replies.

I have contacted support and they are not aware of any tool available yet to address this issue. The previous information is not correct; as of now, almost a month on and there's still no patch for this flaw and we appear to be getting incorrect information.

If anyone has an update on this, please post here (until this thread is also closed, I guess).

The response I received is that "our team is looking into this and coming up with the patch as we speak".

The response I received initially was 'Downgrade windows'.. *cough*. I think the tool is still *very* new and maybe not all the staff are aware of it. I've brought this up with RazerSapiyo via PM and they have advised me the support team will be in contact shortly with the correct information.

It's also possible they had issues with the update and needed further development/testing or something. These things are pretty common.

Razer staff locked the thread. I've contacted support multiple times. There is no patch. There likely won't be one. I'm done with Razer.

I put in another support ticket yesterday. This morning there was an email saying that escalation was required and please wait another 48 hours.

A link to download the fix would have been so much easier.

  9. I received this email from Razer Support regarding this issue and the updated firmware link is included! Here's the entire email text (with names removed) - the update is actually the second link listed in step 2 below:

Razer has released a firmware update to address this vulnerability.

    :cool_::cool_::cool_::cool_::cool_::cool_::cool_: Thank You Venetian!

My model is the RZ09-1963. The fix worked perfectly, and it took less than two minutes including the download and reboot. If only @RazerSapiyo had posted what you just posted, in the other thread that he closed instead, it would have been really wonderful and generated a lot of goodwill.

The Intel Risk Assessment tool reports my system as being patched as well.

Now why was that so hard?

Aren’t the effected systems only Skylake and Kabylakes Blade? Haswel Blades (~2015) aren’t “infected”, so the list is right.
Thanks for sharing and being my “poison tester”;), I’ll try this:)

Awesome, thanks @VenetianRedpulsehome388 . Support escalated my request a while ago, but I got no response.

Edit: just got the same email from support. Great.

Before you throw any shade at me, please understand that I'm not deliberately holding back information such as links to the patch and instructions. I would very much like to help you with your problem if I could.

@VenetianRedpulsehome388 got that from our support teams, which I clearly stated in my reply before I locked the thread. He simply followed instructions and it worked.

If speaking to our support teams does not solve your issue, feel free to PM me and I will follow up with them.

Razer should put the link there:

I mean cmon ! (and say you need 7Zip)

@RazerSapiyo Can you tell us, if that FW update also includes a CPU microcode update for the Skylake / Kaby Lake Hyper-threading bug (namely issue SKL150 in the Intel spec sheet) ?

Without a firmware update, microcode updates are delivered through windows update and loaded every time the system boots up. It's not much different than the binary blobs loaded into wifi or gsm cards.

Ive read that applying the fix can cause a hit to CPU performance by anywhere from 8-30% slowdown. Anyone that applied the fix notice any difference ?

  18. You misled everyone into thinking that a patch was available when it wasn't and then locked the thread to stop us from providing correct information to others. Your actions are suspicious and you in no way helped me to resolve the problem. If you aren't able to help folks then you should simply refrain from posting.

Nobody here* will ever even use the management engine for anything and we'd be better off if Intel just disabled it completely. It runs completely independently of the CPU, LOL.

*ok, nobody using a razer laptop, because razer doesn't provide any tools to use it. But the hardware still exists.

A fair number of threads that complain about hardware defects just disappear from this site without a trace, because 'it's a support issue'. There was a post yesterday about a 2017 14" Blade with a defective battery and it's gone now. Another RBS 2016 that was completely dead, that thread is gone too. Dear Leader doesn't want people to know there might be problems with our laptops. So you should consider it lucky the thread was only locked.

Even if only Razer Support can fix the issue it would be nice to know what the outcome is especially since it's been coming out that support will just hold your laptop ransom because of negative amazon reviews etc.

I have an MSEE and develop battery controller software for heavy trucks and buses. I think I could offer some advice on a cheesy little laptop battery. Better than the support drone, at least. I guess just not here. Maybe we should all go to over to the razer subreddit.

That's a different issue, this is for an issue in the Intel Management Engine not the recent CPU speculative execution security issues, just fyi
