Laptop needs external monitor plugged-in on start, otherwise crashes

  1. Razer Blade late 2016.

    I had an external monitor plugged in during installation of ubuntu desktop 16.04.

    Now when the monitor is not plugged in, Ubuntu crashes right after I enter the login password.

    If I click on the system settings to try and change display settings, it crashes instantly.

    I dont know if I can save this install or if I should delete the ubuntu partition from windows and start over.

    Also wonder if ubuntu 17.10 desktop is more stable.
