There’s a reason why the Razer BlackWidow is the best-selling mechanical gaming keyboard in the world. (If you’ve not gotten your hands on one, with an extensive family line, now’s the time to do so: http://rzr.to/bwu2016)

While many are content with existing pre-made switches, we’re not, and we’ve designed the Razer Mechanical Switches from ground up –JUST- for gaming. At the same time, thanks to feedback from pro-gamers and fans, we’ve improved on our existing designs to include a lit space bar, a re-designed indicator panel and a better smudge-resistant coating.

So what’s new in the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016? Check out our Insider FAQ:

    1. What are the prominent features of the Razer BlackWidow 2016?

They’re equipped with our very own Razer™ Mechanical Switches designed for gaming (Razer Greens are tactile and clicky, Razer Oranges are tactile and silent & found on the Stealth Edition).
    • The keys are individually backlit and comes with advanced lighting capabilities – via Razer Synapse
    • It is now treated with a new smudge-resistant coating.
    • It has a redesigned (and cleaner looking) indicator panel.
    • The space bar and function keys are now backlit.

    2. How is the lighting on the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016 different from its predecessors?

The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016 introduces lighting technology from the Chroma line and has a built-in advanced LED controller like the BlackWidow Chroma. This allows for the same dynamic lighting effects as the Chroma (Wave, Breathing and the new Starlight effect) on the green LEDs and gives complete control of the keyboard’s lighting system.

With the advanced effects configurator on Razer Synapse you can even create elaborate multi-layer lighting effects for any zone that you define on the keyboard.

    3. Does the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016 support the Chroma SDK?

    No it does not.

    4. Will my BlackWidow Ultimate 2013/2014 (or older) support these lighting effects via a future update?

No, and we’re unable to due to hardware changes on the product, namely the microcontrollers that drives these advanced lighting effects.

    5. Why were the additional 5 macro keys removed from the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016?

We want to make a keyboard that fits the needs of everyone out there, and the removal of the macro keys for this product is based on feedback we’ve received from the community over the years. The 2016 edition has a smaller footprint compared to its predecessors. The BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 and the BlackWidow Chroma will continue to have macro keys so gamers have this choice for every form factor, backlit and switch type options.

    6. So are existing/previous BlackWidow (Ultimate) keyboards still relevant today?

Yes it most definitely is! We’re opening up more options. Need a smaller footprint, and portability? Go with the Razer BlackWidow Tournament. Want an immersive gaming experience via innovative and customizable lighting? Hit up our Chroma line of BlackWidow keyboards. They’re every bit as good.

    7. Will the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016 be available in all regional layouts and switch types?

Yes the BlackWidow Ultimate 2016 will be available in all regional layouts and switch types as the BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 edition

    8. Why does the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016 have only one audio jack? What happened to the mic?

The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016 has a single combined 4 pole audio and microphone port.

if there is one complant I have over the Blackwidow chroma it's the way it gets stained very quicky. I have marks all over the plastic like little dots that just won't come off.

I take it this new one with it's smudge coating won't get that?

Aside from the macro keys and chroma lighting, what else is different between the 2016 black widow ultimate and the black widow chroma?

Thanks for the response Burgz. I guess now I'm just wondering if a new version of the Chroma is coming out. I guess if I'm gonna be financially responsible then I should wait a bit anyway, and I can then see what's out at that time. :)

No point in waiting, really... :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Highly unlikely that a newer edition is going to be released right after the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2016.

I was thinking something like August. What do you figure the over/under is for it being out by then? =P

I'm actually waiting at least until the Core is out since I primarily intend to use it (the keyboard) with my RBS when docked at home.
