New Razer Blade 2016 - Driving 2x External Monitors

    Hello all,

    Looking for some advice driving 2x Dell U2414H external monitors with HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, and DisplayPort inputs; these monitors also support DP1.2 daisy-chaining. In my previous setup, I found that daisy-chaining resulted in a lot of microstutters and a poor experience overall; instead, I chose to drive each monitor independently with my laptop's HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs.

    With the Razer Blade 2016, I was hoping I could use a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter to try out daisy-chaining again. After hooking everything up, it seems to work; however, I am still getting stutters every now and then. When I checked out the NVIDIA Control Panel, I noticed that both 'DisplayPort' connections (really the single USB-C connection) are connected to the Intel Graphics rather than the NVIDIA 1060; is there any way to fix this, or is it simply how the hardware is set up?

    As an alternative approach, could I purchase an active HDMI to DisplayPort adapter that would allow the NVIDIA 1060 to drive both displays? I was looking at the following adapter on Amazon ($40): (Edit: Link removed, adapter did not work as expected; see post further down for details).

    As a final possibility, could I utilize both the USB-C to DisplayPort and HDMI connections to drive each monitor independently? I've read reports elsewhere that this isn't supported for whatever reason...

    I think that's how the hardware is setup, you can't utilize the dGPU from the USB-C, I guess to them they saw it as useless since you can get the razer core.

    Also there's no HDMI to DisplayPort converter that supporys multi-streaming transport for daisy chaining.

    So it's either only have 1 external display with the dGPU or several displays but all on the internal Intel gpu.
  3. Try setting the preferred GPU to the nvidia chip in drivers when you're plugged in. I also think it might just be a case of only being able to run intel graphics on thunderbolt.
  4. It's also the same issue with my USB3 dock. I was hoping that a USB-C dock would work. It sounds like it will not. I am driving a single 1440p display. If I do anything other than direct HDMI it uses the on-board GPU.

    Razzo161 - I tried that, and it did not work for me (Dell D3100 dock). Good suggestion though.

    Hey all,

    Thanks for the responses. After some testing, I've come up with the following results:

    USB-C to Daisy-Chained DP: Seems to work alright, but you do get occasional stutters. If you aren't gaming a lot (or perhaps only game on the Razer Blade screen when disconnected from your monitors), this might be acceptable.

    HDMI to DP Converter (to Daisy Chain): This results in a single image being output on both screens. It is driven from the NVIDIA chip though!

    HDMI + USB-C to DP: This configuration actually works, but has some weird effects. When moving items from the DP monitor to the HDMI monitor (and vice-versa), I would often see graphical errors such as the screen blacking out upon trying to full-screen a window. Checking the NVIDIA Control Panel ("Set PhysX Configuration"), it also only shows the HDMI port and connected monitor as the sole output source (so you are perhaps losing PhysX support on the DP monitor then).

    In general, it doesn't seem like the Razer Blade was designed to have this functionality without the Core. Too bad... going to have to return it and get something else. Currently have an ASUS GL502VS on order, we'll see how that does.
